How to Dress for India's Seasons Without Buying Twice a Year

India is not one climate, and most seasonal wardrobe advice is written for countries that have four even seasons. Here the practical picture is closer to a long hot stretch, a wet stretch, and a short cool stretch of wildly varying severity depending on where you live.

The Four Real Conditions

  • Dry heat, March to June across the north and centre, where airflow matters most

  • Humid heat, coastal and eastern regions, where moisture absorption matters more than airflow

  • Monsoon, roughly June to September, where drying speed and colour choice matter

  • Cool, November to February, severe in the north and barely present in the far south

Most people only genuinely need separate clothing for the fourth, and only if they live north of roughly Nagpur.

The Base That Carries Across

A relaxed-cut cotton tee works in three of the four conditions with no modification. That is the whole argument for building around it.

  1. Dry heat: loose cotton lets air move, which fitted synthetics cannot

  2. Humid heat: cotton absorbs moisture and allows evaporation; polyester traps it

  3. Monsoon: dark cotton handles splashing and dries acceptably if not too heavy

  4. Cool: the same tee becomes a mid-layer under an overshirt or jacket

Weight Is the Variable That Matters

Rather than owning summer clothes and winter clothes, most people in India are better served owning the same silhouettes at two fabric weights.

Lighter cotton for April to June in the hottest regions. Mid to heavy cotton for the remaining eight to nine months, including as a winter base layer.

Which weight suits which condition is covered in 180 GSM vs 240 GSM and is 240 GSM too hot for Indian summer.

Region Changes the Answer

  • Delhi and the north: real winter, so two genuine warm layers are necessary

  • Mumbai and the west coast: humidity dominates, and heavy fabric is uncomfortable most of the year

  • Bengaluru: mild year-round, so one light layer covers nearly everything

  • Chennai and the south-east: heat and humidity with almost no cool season

  • Hill regions: genuine cold, with layering needed for much of the year

The Delhi-specific version is in what to wear in Delhi.

What Not to Buy Seasonally

Clothing bought for one specific season tends to be worn least and regretted most, because it sits unused for eight months and feels dated when it returns.

Running the thirty wears question on seasonal purchases usually settles it quickly: the 30 wears test.

What we publish about our own tees: 100% cotton, 240 GSM (220 GSM on WARLI), screen printed, relaxed unisex fit, XS(40) to XL(48), Rs 1,349. We do not publish factory information or hold environmental certification, and we will not imply otherwise.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I dress for Indian weather year-round?

Build around relaxed-cut cotton, which works in dry heat, humid heat and monsoon, and becomes a mid-layer in winter. Vary fabric weight rather than owning separate seasonal wardrobes.

What fabric is best for Indian summers?

Cotton, because it absorbs moisture and allows evaporation. Cut matters as much as fabric, since a loose silhouette lets air move around the body.

Do I need separate summer and winter clothes in India?

Mostly only if you live in the north or in hill regions. Elsewhere the same silhouettes at two fabric weights cover almost the whole year.

What should I avoid buying seasonally?

Pieces that only work in one season. They sit unused for most of the year and often feel dated by the time the season returns.
