Handloom vs Powerloom: What the Difference Actually Is
Handloom fabric is woven on a loom operated by a person. Powerloom fabric is woven on a mechanically driven loom. That sounds like a distinction about labour, and it also produces measurably different cloth.
What Changes in the Fabric
Handloom has slight irregularity in weave density, since tension varies with the weaver
That irregularity creates a surface that catches light unevenly, which reads as depth
Handloom generally breathes more at equivalent weight, due to a slightly looser structure
Powerloom is more uniform, faster to produce and considerably cheaper per metre
Powerloom can hold tighter tolerances, which matters for some technical fabrics
Neither is simply better. They are different processes suited to different things, and the romance around one should not obscure that.
How to Tell Them Apart
Look at the selvedge, the finished edge, which is often slightly irregular on handloom
Hold it to light and look for small variations in density across the weave
Feel for a slightly uneven surface rather than a perfectly flat one
Check for the Handloom Mark, a government certification for genuine handloom
Ask the seller which cluster it came from, since a real answer usually exists
Scale and Livelihoods
India's handloom sector is among the largest in the world and supports a very substantial number of weaver households, concentrated in clusters across states including Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Odisha.
It is also under sustained pressure from powerloom imitation, including products sold as handloom that are not. The Handloom Mark exists precisely because that substitution is common.
The economic argument behind Indian handloom has a long history, covered in khadi was never just cloth.
Where Each Makes Sense
Handloom suits woven garments where drape and surface character matter: shirting, saris, stoles, kurta fabric.
T-shirts are a different case entirely. Jersey for t-shirts is knitted rather than woven, on circular knitting machines, so the handloom question does not really arise for this category.
That is worth stating plainly because some brands blur it. A knitted cotton tee is not handloom, and describing it that way would be inaccurate.
What we publish about our own tees: 100% cotton, 240 GSM (220 GSM on WARLI), screen printed, relaxed unisex fit, XS(40) to XL(48), Rs 1,349. We do not publish factory information or hold environmental certification, and we will not imply otherwise.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between handloom and powerloom?
Handloom is woven by a person, powerloom by a mechanically driven loom. Handloom has slight weave irregularity giving surface depth and breathability; powerloom is uniform, faster and cheaper.
How can I identify genuine handloom fabric?
Look for slight irregularity in the weave and selvedge, check for the government Handloom Mark, and ask the seller which weaving cluster it came from.
Are t-shirts handloom?
Generally not. T-shirt jersey is knitted on circular knitting machines rather than woven on looms, so the handloom distinction does not apply to this category.
Is handloom better quality than powerloom?
Neither is universally better. Handloom offers surface character and breathability; powerloom offers uniformity and tighter tolerances. They suit different applications.
