How to Wash and Care for Oversized T-Shirts So They Last Years | Shunya Theory

Updated: Aug 13

There is a widespread belief that garments have a natural lifespan and eventually give out. Mostly untrue. Most clothing that fails was killed, by heat, over-washing, the wrong detergent, or being hung on the wrong thing. All correctable, and none of it costs money.

You Are Washing Too Often

This is the biggest single factor and the hardest habit to change. A tee worn a few hours in mild weather does not need washing. Airing it overnight is usually enough.

Every cycle is mechanical abrasion, fibres break, colour leaves, elastic degrades. A garment washed after every wear lasts roughly a third as long as the same garment washed when actually dirty.

The exception is anything worn against skin in heat, which does need washing. Indian summers are not the place for heroic restraint, see dressing for Delhi's climate.

SHUNYA THEORY

Clothes rarely wear out. They get worn out.

Rooted in heritage. Refined through minimalism. Designed for a conscious, modern India.

Every piece carries symbolism, silence, and intention where tradition evolves into streetwear, and clothing becomes identity.

Heat Is the Enemy Throughout

Hot water sets stains, shrinks cotton and accelerates colour loss. Tumble dryers are worse, the lint in the filter is your garment, converted into dust.

Cold water and line drying solve almost everything. In Indian conditions that is easy, with one caveat: direct sun bleaches. Dry in shade and turn dark garments inside out. Ironing on high heat flattens fibre and creates permanent shine on dark fabric.

The Small Habits That Compound

  • Turn everything inside out before washing to protect the outer face

  • Never hang heavyweight tees, the shoulders stretch permanently, especially on oversized drop-shoulder cuts

  • Skip fabric softener; it coats fibres and reduces absorbency

  • Wash dark and light separately for the first several cycles of anything new

  • Repair small damage immediately, a loose seam becomes a hole in one wash

Caring for Naturally Dyed and Printed Pieces

WARLI printed oversized tee India — print care and washing

Printed pieces like WARLI and ARKA want the same treatment with one addition: turn inside out every single wash, and never iron directly over the print. VANVAAS and YAMA are more forgiving. If you own anything naturally dyedour indigo guide covers the specifics.

A Routine That Works

  1. Air worn garments overnight before deciding whether to wash

  2. Spot-clean small marks instead of running a full cycle

  3. Wash cold, gentle cycle, inside out, minimal detergent

  4. Line dry in shade, reshaping while damp

  5. Fold heavy pieces, hang light ones, repair immediately

Care as Relationship

When you repair something rather than replacing it, the repair becomes part of the object's history, visible, specific, yours. Japanese boro built an aesthetic on this, and Indian textile culture has its own long tradition of darning and passing garments down through wear.

A garment maintained for five years is not the one you bought. It has been shaped by your use, and that is the record, not the damage. Buy something worth keeping.
