The fastest way to get your t-shirt size right online: measure the chest of a t-shirt you already own and like, lay it flat, double the underarm-to-underarm measurement, and match that number to the size chart. Do not guess from S, M or L, those letters mean different things at every brand.
What 40, 42, 44, 46 and 48 Actually Mean
Indian t-shirt sizing is usually expressed in inches of chest measurement. A size 40 is built for a roughly 40-inch chest, a 42 for 42 inches, and so on. This is far more reliable than letter sizing because it refers to an actual body measurement rather than a brand's interpretation.
XS (40), roughly 38 to 40 inch chest
S (42), roughly 40 to 42 inch chest
M (44), roughly 42 to 44 inch chest
L (46), roughly 44 to 46 inch chest
XL (48), roughly 46 to 48 inch chest
Shunya Theory uses exactly this system, labelled XS(40) through XL(48), across all four designs. The number is the useful part; the letter is only there for familiarity.
How to Measure Correctly at Home
There are two methods. The second is more reliable.
Method 1, measure your body.
Stand relaxed, arms down, and breathe normally.
Wrap a soft tape around the fullest part of your chest, under the armpits.
Keep the tape level across your back, this is where most people go wrong.
Do not pull it tight. It should sit flat without compressing.
Read the number in inches and match it to the chart above.
Method 2, measure a t-shirt you already like.
Lay the shirt flat on a table and smooth out wrinkles.
Measure straight across from one underarm seam to the other.
Double that number. That is the garment's chest measurement.
Also measure length from the highest point of the shoulder to the hem.
Compare both to the size chart, not just the chest.
Method 2 works better because it tells you what you actually find comfortable, rather than what a chart thinks you should wear.
Relaxed Fit Changes the Maths
This is the part that causes most sizing confusion. A relaxed or oversized cut already includes extra room in the body and a dropped shoulder seam. The size number still refers to your chest, the garment is simply cut wider than that number.
So for a relaxed fit, order your normal chest size. Sizing up on top of a cut that is already generous is how people end up with a t-shirt that reaches mid-thigh. There is a full breakdown in should you size up or down in a relaxed fit.
Unisex Sizing: How It Works for Women
Unisex sizing is built on a straighter body block than women's-specific sizing, less waist shaping, a wider shoulder, a boxier body. It is not a men's shirt with a different label, but it is closer to men's proportions.
Two approaches work well. For a fitted look, take your usual chest measurement and expect a straighter silhouette through the waist. For a deliberately loose look, size up once. Many women size up one or two for a longer, more relaxed drape, that is a styling choice, not a sizing error.
Five Mistakes That Cause Wrong-Size Orders
Guessing from the letter instead of checking the chest number
Assuming your size at one brand carries over to another
Measuring over a thick shirt or a jacket
Pulling the tape tight, which reads one to two inches small
Ignoring garment length, a shirt can fit the chest and still look wrong
Frequently Asked Questions
What size t-shirt should I buy if my chest is 40 inches?
A 40-inch chest maps to XS(40) in an inch-based Indian size chart. In a relaxed fit, that size will still give you a loose, boxy silhouette because the cut adds room beyond the chest number.
Should I size up for a relaxed or oversized t-shirt?
Usually no. A relaxed cut already builds in the extra width. Order your normal chest size unless you specifically want an exaggerated, longer drape.
Are unisex t-shirts suitable for women?
Yes. Unisex sizing uses a straighter body block with less waist shaping. Women who want a closer fit should take their chest measurement; those wanting a loose look often go one size up.
How do I know my size without a measuring tape?
Measure a t-shirt you already own using any ruler or a length of string marked against one. Underarm to underarm, doubled, gives you the garment chest to compare against a size chart.
