Unisex sizing is built on a straighter body block than women's-specific sizing, with less waist shaping, a wider shoulder and a boxier body. For men it usually maps directly to your normal chest size. For women it fits looser through the waist, and you can take your chest measurement for a standard fit or size up for a deliberately relaxed look.
What Makes a Block Unisex
Garment patterns start from a body block, a base template of proportions. A women's block narrows at the waist and accounts for bust shaping. A men's block runs straighter with broader shoulders.
A unisex block sits closer to the men's version but with adjustments that stop it reading as oversized on smaller frames, mainly in shoulder width and armhole depth. It is a genuine third pattern, not a relabelled men's tee.
For Men
Order your normal chest size. Unisex sizing on an inch-based chart maps directly, so a 42-inch chest takes a size 42. In a relaxed cut you get extra width through the body, which is the intended fit rather than a sizing error.
For Women
Two approaches, both valid, depending on the look you want.
For a standard fit, take your chest measurement and order that size. Expect a straighter line through the waist than a women's cut.
For a relaxed, longer look, size up once. This is the most common choice and gives the loose drape most people want from a unisex tee.
For a deliberately oversized look, size up twice, accepting the hem will sit long.
If you are between sizes, the smaller usually reads neater; the larger reads more relaxed.
