GSM stands for grams per square metre. It is the weight of one square metre of the fabric a t-shirt is made from, and it is the single most useful number on any listing, because weight predicts almost everything else about how the shirt behaves.
Short answer: under 150 GSM is thin and drapes limply, 160 to 190 GSM is standard summer weight, 190 to 220 GSM is the everyday sweet spot in India, and 220 GSM and above is heavyweight, structured, opaque, and better suited to relaxed and oversized cuts.
What the GSM Ranges Actually Feel Like
120 to 150 GSM, very light. Often semi-transparent, especially in white. Loses shape quickly. Common in cheap multipacks.
160 to 190 GSM, standard. Breathable and fine for hot weather, but shows body outline and can go shapeless within a year.
190 to 220 GSM, the practical middle. Opaque, holds a collar, still comfortable through most of an Indian summer.
220 to 250 GSM, heavyweight. Structured enough to hold a drop shoulder and a boxy silhouette without clinging.
250 GSM and above, very heavy. Excellent drape and durability, but slow to dry and warm for peak summer in most of India.
Why GSM Matters More for Relaxed and Oversized Cuts
A fitted t-shirt is held in shape by your body. A relaxed or oversized cut is not, it has to hold its own shape across a much larger area of unsupported fabric.
This is why light fabric fails badly in a loose cut. At 150 GSM, a relaxed t-shirt does not drape; it balloons and then collapses. The same pattern cut in 220 GSM falls in clean vertical lines from the shoulder. The cut is identical. The weight is doing the work.

Does Higher GSM Mean Better Quality?
No, and this is where a lot of buyers get misled. GSM measures weight, not quality. A heavy shirt made from short-staple cotton will pill and go fuzzy faster than a lighter shirt made from good combed yarn.
Weight tells you how a shirt will feel and hang. Yarn quality tells you how it will age. You need both, and a listing that shouts about GSM while saying nothing about the cotton is telling you only half the story.

GSM and Indian Weather: The Honest Trade-Off
There is a real tension here and most brands avoid mentioning it. Heavier fabric is more durable and drapes better. It is also warmer and takes longer to dry.
In practice, for most of India, 190 to 220 GSM is the widest usable range, heavy enough to hold shape, light enough to wear from March to October. Above 240 GSM becomes genuinely uncomfortable in peak summer in Delhi, Chennai or Mumbai, though it is excellent from November onward and in hill stations year-round.

How to Check GSM When It Is Not Listed
Hold the shirt up to a window. Heavy fabric blocks most light; light fabric glows through.
Bunch a section in your fist and release it. Heavier knit springs back with body; light knit stays creased and limp.
Check the shoulder seam under tension. Light fabric puckers and distorts around stitching.
Weigh it. A size M adult tee at roughly 180 GSM weighs around 160 to 180g; at 240 GSM it is closer to 220 to 250g.
Ask the seller directly. A brand that knows its GSM will tell you immediately.
