What Heat Does to a Print
Screen printing ink is cured at a specific temperature to bond it into the fibre. An iron on a cotton setting can reach a similar temperature, which softens that cured layer again.
Softened ink under pressure does one of three things. It flattens and loses texture, it takes on a glossy sheen that never comes back, or it transfers onto the iron plate and is simply gone.

Turn the shirt completely inside out
Set the iron to low, around the synthetic or wool setting rather than cotton
Turn steam off, since moisture plus heat softens ink faster

If a Print Has Already Melted
