Should You Size Up in an Oversized or Relaxed T-Shirt?

In most cases, no. A relaxed or oversized t-shirt is already cut wider than your chest measurement, so ordering your normal size gives you the intended silhouette. Sizing up on top of a cut that is already generous is the single most common reason people end up with a tee that reaches mid-thigh.

Why the Confusion Exists

The size label refers to your body, not to the garment. A size 42 relaxed tee is designed for a 42-inch chest, the garment itself measures considerably more than 42 inches around, because that extra width is the fit.

People assume the number describes the garment and conclude they need to go larger to get a loose look. They do not. The pattern has already done that work.

If you are unsure how the numbers map, our t-shirt size guide for India walks through measuring properly.

What Happens When You Size Up Anyway

Sizing up scales every dimension, not just width. You gain body width, but you also gain length and sleeve length in the same proportion.

  • The hem drops toward mid-thigh, which reads as a dress rather than a tee

  • The shoulder seam slides further down the arm than the design intended

  • Sleeves reach past the elbow and lose their shape

  • The neckline sits wider and can slip off the shoulder

  • The overall proportion looks accidental rather than deliberate

When Sizing Up Genuinely Makes Sense

There are legitimate reasons, and they are all deliberate choices rather than corrections:

  1. You specifically want an exaggerated, longer streetwear silhouette

  2. You are between two sizes and prefer the looser of the two

  3. You intend to layer it over a hoodie or sweatshirt in winter

  4. You are shorter and want the length as an intentional oversized look, understanding it will sit long

  5. You are buying a fitted-cut shirt and want relaxed proportions from it

Sizing Down: Rarely the Answer

Some people size down to reduce volume in a relaxed cut. This usually backfires, you lose width across the chest and shoulders before you lose length, so the shirt ends up tight where it should be loose and still long.

If you want less volume, choose a different cut rather than a smaller size. The differences are laid out in relaxed vs oversized vs regular fit.

The Reliable Method

Measure a t-shirt you already own and like: lay it flat, measure underarm to underarm, double it. Compare that against the brand's garment measurements rather than against your body size. That single comparison removes almost all guesswork.

For reference, Shunya Theory tees are 100% cotton, 240 GSM (220 GSM on WARLI), screen printed, relaxed fit, XS(40) to XL(48), ₹1,349.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I size up for an oversized t-shirt?

Generally no. Oversized and relaxed cuts already include extra width in the pattern. Order your normal chest size unless you specifically want an exaggerated, longer drape.

What happens if I size up in a relaxed fit tee?

You gain length and sleeve length along with width, so the shirt sits longer and the shoulder seam drops further than intended. It often reads as ill-fitting rather than deliberately loose.

I'm between two sizes, which should I pick?

In a relaxed cut, the smaller of the two usually gives the intended silhouette. Choose the larger only if you want a deliberately longer, looser look or plan to layer over it.

Should women size up in unisex t-shirts?

Only as a styling choice. Unisex sizing already runs straighter and roomier than women's-specific cuts. Take your chest measurement for the intended fit, or size up once for a deliberately oversized look.
