Water-based ink soaks into the cotton fibre and becomes part of the fabric, producing a print you can barely feel. Plastisol sits on top of the fibre as a flexible layer, giving brighter and more opaque colour, particularly on dark garments. Both are used in quality screen printing for different reasons.
Water-Based Ink
The pigment is carried in water, which evaporates during curing, leaving the colour bonded into the fibre itself.
Very soft hand feel, often undetectable to the touch
Breathable, since the fabric is not sealed under a layer
Ages by fading gently rather than cracking
Less opaque on dark fabric, since it works with the base colour rather than covering it
More demanding to print consistently, and requires accurate curing
Plastisol Ink
A PVC-based ink that does not soak in. It sits on the surface and cures into a flexible layer bonded to the fabric.
Highly opaque, so bright colours work on black without a heavy underbase
Very consistent to print, which is why it dominates commercial production
Detectable by touch, ranging from slight to a distinct patch depending on thickness
Durable when correctly cured, though thick deposits crack sooner

Which Lasts Longer?
Neither is inherently more durable. Curing quality matters far more than ink type.
A correctly cured plastisol print will outlast an under-cured water-based one comfortably, and the reverse is equally true. What differs is how they fail: water-based fades gradually, plastisol cracks.

How to Tell Which You Have
Run a finger over the print with your eyes closed
If you cannot locate the edge by touch, it is likely water-based
If you feel a distinct raised patch, it is plastisol
Check opacity on dark fabric, since very bright colour on black usually means plastisol
